About Me: La Brunette
My name is Sara. I grew up in Southern California, moved to San Francisco for college and haven’t managed to stay in one place for more than a few years since. I started this blog from a tiny apartment in Paris’ 11e arrondissement and now write from Washington, DC. It started out as a way to reach out to far-away family and friends — including my adorable grandmother who, without a computer, reads this blog in hard copy installments delivered by my parents. And, it just never stopped. I write about the people, places, and things I like, usually involving travel, food, cycling and quirky little corners of my favorite cities.
What kind of bike do you ride?
I was once the owner of a much-loved, blue Phoenix roadster (or, at least parts of it were), which I had to leave behind in Beijing. I don’t have a bike of my own at the moment, but I’m an avid public bikeshare user.
Why all the French?
As a French-American, French language and culture have always been a big part of my life, and so a big part of this blog too.

Bonjour, Sans-H,
Thanks for pointing me at your blog. I haven’t read everything on it, but did go through the post about living in Paris from start to finish. Aside from the fact that you captured very exactly what I suspect is every Francophile’s view of the City of Light, the writing is just extraordinarily good, the sort of thing we used to attribute to good Catholic schools. After using Velib quite a lot on the last several trips, I can also appreciate the virtues of la petite reine as a mode of transportation and one of the best ways to see the city.
I’ll look forward to getting together when we’re over next month.
Best regards,
Mike Hooban
Mike,
Thanks so much for your kind words. It’ll be great to get together when you’re in town. Looking forward to it. Dis “bonjour” à tout le monde à l’Alliance de ma part.
Safe travels and à bientôt,
Sans-H
Hello Sara,
Thank you for following thatlou, I really appreciate it! How wonderful the breadth of the places you’ve lived! Where in Asia were you?
If you’re in town the first weekend of the month and would like to go on a treasure hunt at the Louvre, just let me know.
I look forward to stopping by often!
Kind regards,
Daisy
Hi Daisy,
Thanks for stopping by! We lived in Beijing for a year and were very lucky to have generous vacation time that allowed us to travel quite a bit. It was wonderful and I’ve been itching for a chance to go back for an extended period ever since.
I really like your treasure hunt idea it works for those who’ve been to the Louvre umpteen times as well as for tourists and visitors. You can’t possibly “do” a museum that expansive in a day or two, so why not have fun with it?
Best of luck to you!
S
Hi Sara,
Nominated you for a couple of awards today. Check out my lates post for details.
Best,
Conor
Thanks Conor. That’s so very kind of you. And, I believe some congratulations to you are in order as well!
Hi Sara, I’m here via the kind introduction of Daisy de Plume and am chuffed to discover that besides Washington, DC, Paris, and Beijing, we also share Southern California! I was born and raised behind the Orange curtain
I look forward to following your posts!
